Capoeira

Attached to this Capoeira menu page you will find other pages in the sub-menus that have specific capoeira stories.  But for those of you unfamiliar with capoeira...

There are basically 3 different styles (below) of Capoeira (kah-PWAY-ruh).  You can find tons of it on YouTube. Here's a description on Wikipedia.  Like all martial arts, one must know the moves (the "vocabulary" of the art) and apply them with strategy - striking, defending, anticipating, tricking, counterattacking - but all without intentional contact.  Sometimes, however, contact is made inadvertently (or in some cases, with malicious intent).  The people in these videos have been playing for years (10-30+ years).  So needless to say, my short 9-10 months of experience means I'm nowhere near their ability.  But it's still lots of fun!!  Here are just a few video examples of different styles...

One man's brief description of capoeira in general

Very slow ("Angola")

Faster ("Regional")

Fast w/ jumps and acrobatics ("Contemporãnea")

Amazing core strength and agility (especially the very last scene)!!

Here are the masters and teachers from my school in Los Angeles putting on a demonstration

A little description below I got off Facebook from my Capoeirista friends.  This sums it up perfectly!!!
